Celebrating Life. Here & Now.

“If we are ever to enjoy life, now is the time, not tomorrow or next year…Today should always be our most wonderful day.”

– Thomas Dreier.

In every culture, we do have special times set aside to celebrate life or a significant event. What we also know as Holidays ! Something that we get so excited about ! For they play a major role in our lives and are intertwined with our physical, mental and emotional states.

fTake a break !

Our life’s effort is motivated by the prospect of a reward.

On a “ feeling”  level – holidays are a reward. No work to worry about. Just doing things that one wouldn’t otherwise do. And which matter to us. Stuff we can really enjoy and perhaps experience once in a lifetime. Pausing to celebrate life is our reward for all the hard work we otherwise put into our lives. Much like walking towards the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Even taking time off from one’s normal routine to have fun and celebrate life fits into this “reward” category.

Rewards can be anything !

Rewards can have material value or emotional value. Most of us work for a material reward in the form of a monthly pay-check. A few others love what they do so much – that the monetary reward is unimportant and is secondary. The feeling of accomplishment they experience is what matters.

When we achieve something that matters to us  – we are emotionally rewarded. The reward can be something intangible – but it creates happiness. This action-reward feedback loop is an intrinsic part of human nature and is closely related to the joy of giving and receiving.

012_villa-fire-placeMake special times happen to celebrate life

Our holidays and associated decisions are often decided by others. But in order to feel truly rewarded and happy – it is important we do this for ourselves. That would enable us to reward ourselves while celebrating our life’s victories. Even the smallest professional achievement or a personal breakthrough can be a catalyst for your reward. And a holiday !

dsc_6964Celebrating the everyday

Any time we succeed in our life – a celebration is in order.  This is one of the ways we give ourselves approval . Whenever you find yourself  achieving something – it is time to reflect on your accomplishments, it’s time to stop and celebrate life. Doing so will funnel massive amounts of approval into your neurological feedback loop.

.Make it an ongoing process

Without a built-in system for receiving approval, one’s motivation begins to fade. If you see your personal progress as a reason to celebrate life – you are providing yourself with the fuel needed to stay motivated.

Personal growth is a never-ending  journey and it pays fabulous dividends. Approval is the single element that keeps the whole process running smoothly.  Make  your own times to celebrate life and your accomplishments. It’s a really powerful way to let yourself know how much you approve!

“The more you praise and celebrate your life,
the more there is in life to celebrate “ ~Oprah Winfrey

Ah, Coffee!!

For a country that’s known to be the largest consumer and the second largest producer of tea in the world – India’s coffee story has come a long way.

1It is believed that a 9th-century Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee. He noticed that his goats, upon eating berries from a certain tree, became so spirited that they did not sleep at night. Kaldi took the berries to a nearby monastery. The Monks there made a drink with the berries and discovered that it kept them alert for the long hours of evening prayer. Soon, this news reached other monasteries, and beyond.

The Arabs were the first to grow and trade coffee. Demand was very high, and coffee beans leaving the Yemeni port of Mocha were heavily guarded. Word of the ‘Wine of Araby’  – as coffee was then called, began to spread beyond Arabia, via pilgrims visiting Mecca every year.

2By the 17th century, coffee had made its way to Europe and was becoming popular across the continent. As demand for the beverage spread, cultivation of coffee beans spread to Indonesia, the Caribbean, South and Central America.

By the end of the 18th century, coffee had become one of the world’s most profitable export crops. Today it is the second most traded commodity on the planet after oil !

It is believed that Coffee arrived in India approximately 400 years ago when the legendary saint Bababudan brought seven magical beans from distant Yemen and planted them in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka.

Indian Coffee is unique and is known for its subtle yet intense flavours. India is the only country that grows all of its coffee under shade. Indian coffee is typically mild and not too acidic, possessing and exotic full-bodied taste and a fine aroma.

For those who love coffee or even merely intrigued by the different varieties available – our coffee primer attempts to de-mystify some of the terms associated with this miracle !

A look at the different ways in which coffee is brewed :

3The French Press

French press makes coffee by steeping the coffee grounds in hot water, and then pressing the grounds out. The plunger is pressed down and coffee poured directly into the cup ! After the drip coffee maker machine, it’s one of the easiest, least time-consuming ways to make a great cup of coffee.

4

The Moka

The stovetop coffee maker, otherwise known as a Moka pot, is easy on the pocket and makes a strong decoction. The Moka pot consists of three chambers, a bottom chamber where water is poured, a filter in the middle where coffee powder is placed and a top chamber. You place the Moka pot on the stove and the steam from the bottom chamber pushes the filtered coffee to the top chamber to give you a brew similar to that of an espresso.  The flavours of Moka and espresso machine brews are very close. However, the stovetop stuff is richer, less acidic, and almost chocolatey

5The Ibrik

It’s a charming metal pot made of brass or copper with a long wood handle – also known as Cezve, in Turkey, whereas in much of the rest of the world, you’re more likely to find it called an Ibrik. The filterless method of brewing combined with an exceptionally finely ground coffee powder produces a cup that’s dark and brooding and when prepared with the addition of sugar and spice, results in a unique and unforgettable brew that’s “ black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love”*

6-jpFilter Coffee

South Indian filter coffee is brewed with a metal device that resembles two cylindrical cups. The upper cup is loaded with fresh ground coffee mixed with chicory. The grounds are gently compressed and boiling water is poured inside. Next, the lid is placed on the top, and the device is left to slowly drip the brewed coffee into the bottom. This brew is generally stronger than western “drip style” coffee. Traditionally, filter coffee is consumed by adding 1–2 tablespoons of the brew to a cup of boiling milk with sugar. The coffee is drunk from a tumbler –  but is often cooled first with a  dabarah – a wide metal saucer with lipped walls !

So that’s our take on the world’s favourite brew ! One that purists will swear by. With their artisanal and customised blends, perfectly brewed just so. And consumed at a specific time – making it an intrinsic part of our lives.

Coffee Rules !

Why Monsoon Holidays Are Better !

The Monsoons are on their way. And this is really the best time to head out for the holiday you’ve been promising yourself.

After all – it feels great heading out when the rest of the world is done and dusted with their holidays and back to their grind.

It’s also the time when places empty out. So you don’t run the risk of bumping into the world when all you wanted was to get away from it in the first place !

Serene surroundingsAnd let’s face it – the monsoon that’s away from the urban chaos and muck is the season that one must savour. It’s a different world – much like the ones we would experience in our childhood. With clean, lush surroundings, puddles that one can jump in, breeze that cools the soul and skies that promise heaven.  And you can even recreate your favourite monsoon memory – floating paper boats or serenading your partner Bollywood style – the choice is yours !

The monsoon in India is believed to cleanse and regenerate the earth and its people. It is also key to India’s agriculture sector, enabling the growth of crops and driving stock markets ! And apart from bringing down temperatures, the monsoon also lowers room rates for travelers, turning India into a great off-season destination.

16The Tree of Life is transformed and beautifully so by the monsoon. Imagine yourself playing Lord of the Manor at the Tree of Life Grand Oak Manor, Binsar at our fabulous perch above the valley and yet right in the middle of the Binsat Wildlife Sanctuary, with heritage  rooms, personalised signature cuisine and our award winning service ! Get away from it all – while the resort is still open for the season.

Infinity Pool at nightAnd what can one say about our fabulous Tree of Life Jaipur ? With just 13 villas in  a lush, green valley in the middle of the Aravalis – create your own personal space to experience the joy of this monsoon. Where else can you swim in your own personal pool as it pours ? Or indulge in spa treatments right in your villa itself – either indoor or outdoor with the monsoon breeze for company. And of course – our MasterChef in residence will whip up whatever your heart desires – all served by our staff that has won us accolades for their service – year after year.

How Technology is Changing Golf

Technology based innovations are now making their debut in the world of Golf. And it’s not soon enough. Critical to a sport that has not been growing – pretty much everything that goes with it has been affected – TV ratings, equipment and merchandise sales, attendance and interest levels. Branded as an elite sport in our country – with terribly limited numbers playing, the picture isn’t too bright.
Pundits however, believe that the advent of technology might be able to help— in attracting new fans and in servicing the pros. Here are examples of new golf tech.

imagesApps
But obviously. And we’re not talking about just virtual golfing apps. There are those which analyse your swing. Or help you keep scores. A slew of new apps have emerged for golf instruction and shot tracking (like Arccos, Visulax, SwingSmart, and Zepp, to name a few) and even for booking tee times and keeping score (Golf Now). Or like GolfMatch – help you find a Golfing Partner. GolfMatch’s algorithm uses behavioural data to find the best matches for a golfer to play a round of golf with. There are a host of other features that enable you to stay connected with other golfers and follow each other’s golfing worlds. Then there is the US Masters app. which allows for individual tracking of specific players so that you can immediately see where your favorites are on the course and the leaderboard. And you don’t get limited to a handful of the top players.

downloadWearables
Golf apps are now on Apple Watch & Anrdoid Wear ! And watch out FitBits, & Garmin bands on players wrists, too. GPS golf watchesshow maps of golf courses and display the golfer’s current distance from each hole. Small sensors placed on gloves or clubs can analyze swings, and some wearables track performance — such as how far the ball travels and how accurate the golfer is on the fairway — in real time. Both amateur and professional golfers alike have started to embrace wearables to improve their games and gain a competitive edge,

Go Pro Cameras
The PGA Tour has got a deal in place with GoPro wherein their cameras will shoot stunning new footage in order to drive social content which would have a higher chance of going viral. The drones however are yet to happen. It’s only a matter of time.

Social. Golf. TV.
Much of the footage recorded by GoPro cameras will feed into videos at Skratch TV which is an online video network targeting young, social media-savvy sports fans. It shares cool and interesting content to make golf go viral.

downloadIBM Watson.
The tool has found an interesting use case in golf: Watson can produce insights on swings, strokes, and shots, plus analyse social media trends, all live on the scene from The Masters. And so IBM has signed a new endorsement deal with 66-year-old Tom Watson, who has won The Masters twice, is playing in it for the final time this year, and says he loves technology and social media !
o-GOLF-facebookSo technology is having its time with the game of golf. A match made in heaven – to enable its popularity potential. And the best way to get the young and the restless plus and the old fogies together with golf technology to grow the sport’s global appeal.
