Saving the Dying Conversation

Step out anywhere. Or stay in. Chances are that you’ll find almost everyone deeply absorbed in the happenings on the screen of their devices. Now it’s fashionable and easy to bring home a computer or tablet for your toddler. All the better to keep her busy with.

A face to face conversation is one that’s becoming rare by the day.  It’s a dying art. Even conversations at work are being rapidly subsumed by mounds of e mail and messenger chats. Our younger generations, bought up on a diet of touch-screen devices will in all probability not have a real conversation because they won’t know how to have one. And neither will those around them.

tatThe problem is with us – those who have seen both sides of the coin. And who know the value and impact a genuine conversation can make. Experts say that face to face conversations are critically important for our well-being. They are also important for our children.

“Conversations with each other are the way children learn to have conversations with themselves, and learn how to be alone,” says Sherry Turkle, a professor of science, technology and society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Learning about solitude and being alone is the bedrock of early development, and you don’t want your kids to miss out on that because you’re pacifying them with a device.” (Bilton)

Experts who observe the phenomenon, believe that technically, that we’re not talking to each other. We’re talking all the time, in person as well as in texts, in e-mails, over the phone, on Facebook and Twitter. We’re talking at each other rather via technology. It is actually ironical – that we are today much more talkative than we have ever been.  But it has happened at the expense of a face to face, living, breathing conversation.

jaagir-lodge-room-1-8570Today – when we compare live conversations to those we have through technology –  they tend to intimidate us a bit. Sometimes awkward, sometimes aggressive, sometimes sparkling, sometimes….nothing. Experts describe them as being messy.  But it is precisely that “ messy-ness “ that is real. Pauses, interruptions, changes, swings and after which point of time – one can almost anticipate the biggie – the point where the tide turns and there is a brilliant sparkling moment – that changes everything.

The Tree of Life encourages you to unwind and just be with yourself. To have a conversation. With nature. With yourself. With your significant other. Far away from the din and cacophony of everyday life. Where even our silences speak. All you need to do is listen. Find yourself.

Celebrating Life. Here & Now.

“If we are ever to enjoy life, now is the time, not tomorrow or next year…Today should always be our most wonderful day.”

– Thomas Dreier.

In every culture, we do have special times set aside to celebrate life or a significant event. What we also know as Holidays ! Something that we get so excited about ! For they play a major role in our lives and are intertwined with our physical, mental and emotional states.

fTake a break !

Our life’s effort is motivated by the prospect of a reward.

On a “ feeling”  level – holidays are a reward. No work to worry about. Just doing things that one wouldn’t otherwise do. And which matter to us. Stuff we can really enjoy and perhaps experience once in a lifetime. Pausing to celebrate life is our reward for all the hard work we otherwise put into our lives. Much like walking towards the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Even taking time off from one’s normal routine to have fun and celebrate life fits into this “reward” category.

Rewards can be anything !

Rewards can have material value or emotional value. Most of us work for a material reward in the form of a monthly pay-check. A few others love what they do so much – that the monetary reward is unimportant and is secondary. The feeling of accomplishment they experience is what matters.

When we achieve something that matters to us  – we are emotionally rewarded. The reward can be something intangible – but it creates happiness. This action-reward feedback loop is an intrinsic part of human nature and is closely related to the joy of giving and receiving.

012_villa-fire-placeMake special times happen to celebrate life

Our holidays and associated decisions are often decided by others. But in order to feel truly rewarded and happy – it is important we do this for ourselves. That would enable us to reward ourselves while celebrating our life’s victories. Even the smallest professional achievement or a personal breakthrough can be a catalyst for your reward. And a holiday !

dsc_6964Celebrating the everyday

Any time we succeed in our life – a celebration is in order.  This is one of the ways we give ourselves approval . Whenever you find yourself  achieving something – it is time to reflect on your accomplishments, it’s time to stop and celebrate life. Doing so will funnel massive amounts of approval into your neurological feedback loop.

.Make it an ongoing process

Without a built-in system for receiving approval, one’s motivation begins to fade. If you see your personal progress as a reason to celebrate life – you are providing yourself with the fuel needed to stay motivated.

Personal growth is a never-ending  journey and it pays fabulous dividends. Approval is the single element that keeps the whole process running smoothly.  Make  your own times to celebrate life and your accomplishments. It’s a really powerful way to let yourself know how much you approve!

“The more you praise and celebrate your life,
the more there is in life to celebrate “ ~Oprah Winfrey

The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve Road Trip.

A road trip to the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is well worth the 430 odd km distance from Delhi. For it’s the Tree of Life Jaagir Lodge that awaits at the end of the 9 plus hour journey. Which becomes the base for your safaris, local excursions, curated experiences and a place where can forget one’s daily drudgery and play Lord of the Manor.

Dudhwa Tiger Reserve consists of  verdant grasslands,  dense ‘sal’ forests and swampy marshes. While the northern edge of the Park lies along the Indo-Nepal border, the River Suheli marks the southern boundary.
The Tree of Life Jaagir Lodge awaits at the end of a long but fulfilling drive. Set amidst sugarcane and mustard fields, this is a private heritage property, built in the 1940’s and used by the British as a hunting lodge. You can imagine it to be your own private, luxurious manor with caring and attentive staff to attend to you !

12356426_1539504513033605_1316061873_n (2)A Tiger Reserve since 1879, Dudhwa became a National Park in 1977 and adopted the Project Tiger in 1988. Although the Tigers at the Park are numerous, sightings are can be a challenge – due to the thick sal forest cover of the area. Besides Tigers, Leopards, Hispid Hares, Swamp Deer (Barasingha) and Rhinos thrive amidst the vegetation. The reserve is also home to a major rhinoceros rehabilitation project which was started since these forests had been the habitat of the rhinoceros 150 years ago.
The birds at Dudhwa National Park in particular, are a delight for any avid bird watcher. The marshlands are especially inviting for about 400 species of resident and migratory birds including the Swamp Partridge, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Bengal Florican, plenty of painted storks, sarus cranes, owls, barbets, woodpeckers, minivets and many more. Much of the park’s avian fauna is aquatic in nature, and is found around Dudhwa’s lakes.
BarThere are a host of curated experiences for you to choose from during your stay. Become One with the Earth where you ride a tractor and till the fields in the nearby village. Experience Sundowners at a special terrace space created at the edge of the marsh. Let the place work its magic to the accompaniment of your favourite beverages. Hop across the nearby Indo-Nepal border. Cross over and spend time at our neighbours’ sampling local cuisine and shopping for trinkets.

12558276_136092090107122_1806599967_nOr ditch everything for our one-of-a-kind spa offering – one that includes a full-day couples’ spa experience over a relaxed day at out spa location and its surrounds – all done at your own pace and time.

We’re opening for the season November 16th onwards. That’s pretty much the best time to experience the charms of the Tree of Life Jaagir Lodge and the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. Don’t miss out this chance to experience the joys of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve and the Tree of Life Jaagir Lodge.

Finding Your Passion

What’s Life without Passion ?

Especially one which makes the world a million times better. Passion that’s a journey on wheels. A journey that’s all about the ride and not a destination. Powered by deep rooted growls and throaty purrs that stop the world in its tracks.

bikes (2)We’re pretty much taken in by the world of motorcycling and the clubs formed by die-hard bikers. Be they around a brand or a location or a type of riding – at the end of the day this is all very deep stuff that where each biker and his mean machine have a story. Where each ride is the experience of a lifetime. Where bikers are bound together by an intense sense of belonging that manifests in the form of rituals, labels, mottoes, and even an attitude towards life.

This pretty much resonates with the way we look at and live out our lives.  At the Tree of Life – it’s all about creating a world that’s one of its kind. Where like –minded folk find themselves. Or indulge in their dreams. Find and create a world that’s uniquely and beautifully its very own self. One where each day brings a new story.

dsc_0167The Tree of Life Resorts at Binsar, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve & Jaipur are brilliantly located – and are at the end of  both short  and long rides – depending upon where you hit the road. Our secluded spaces spread over landscaped hills or deep within wildlife rich jungles or at the edge of a wildlife reserve – offer you and your club members enough space to take over the entire property for your own use. As the day ends and so does your ride – enter our world and indulge in our heritage rooms or private villas with gardens and plunge pools.   Unwind at our Spa and let our MasterChef whip up a personalised meal for you depending upon your tastes and preferences.

Road travelling through forest at dudhwa national park UP, India

And we’ll let you into a secret. The Tree of Life has already been discovered and lies on the maps of a few motorcycle clubs – who keep their knowledge and experience tightly under wraps. And come back to us – year after year. But we believe in sharing our world with more and more like minded bikers. And to let them know that there is always a new story that awaits them at the end of the road each day.

We’d be delighted to host motorcycle clubs at all our resorts. For a detailed discussion call us on +91 9602091000 / 2000.

How To Take Even Better Pictures With Your Phone !

Thanks to smartphones and editing apps, we can now take high quality photos and edit them without too much trouble.
But taking a great photo on your smartphone is not as simple as pointing and shooting. There are plenty of bad smartphone photos out there – I’m sure you’ve seen one or two of them. A great smartphone image is a great thing. And these days even the world’s best professional photographers like to experiment with smartphone photography and happily show off their results.

So, what’s the secret to taking great pictures with your smartphone? Turns out there are a few of them. Check out these tips below to improve your smartphone photography game.

13113854_1800072586880240_1296559293_nFocus on one subject.
Many of the best photos include just one, interesting subject. Plus, it’s usually easier to get the composition right when your photo only has one subject. Spend some extra time setting up the photo, tap the screen of your smartphone to focus the camera on your subject, and shoot ! .

2Y6A0061Embrace negative space.
Use negative space (i.e. empty space) to your advantage here to make your subject stand out even more. When you include a lot of empty space, your subject will stand out more and create greater impact. Negative space is a large expanse of open sky, water, an empty field, or a large wall.

Find interesting perspectives.Post bicycling expedition bliss

One great way to make your photo memorable is to take it at a unique, unexpected angle. This can create a cool illusion with the subjects in your photo. Try taking a photo straight up and playing with the sky as negative space, like in the first photo below. Or take it from the perspective with an object in the foreground – as is the case with the handlebars of this bicycle overlooking the mountains.

12568213_161237267585155_588730887_nPlay with reflections.

Look for opportunities to play with reflections. There are plenty of other sources for great reflection photos: puddles, larger bodies of water, mirrors, sunglasses, glass, metallic surfaces, and more.

Keep an eye out for repetitive patterns.12547604_164116833955972_234400826_n

Repetitive patterns are another pleasing subject to photograph. They appear whenever strong graphic elements are repeated over and over again, such as lines, geometric shapes, forms, and colors. These patterns can make a strong visual impact. Keep an eye out for where they appear naturally. As in this image with rows of lotus shaped lamps.

12556097_182024042154872_1775749746_n

Capture small details.

Close-up photos that capture small, intricate, delicate details can make for really compelling photographs. Because god is in the details..

Keep the flash off.13256418_1107076626015389_9109301579881041766_n
Have you ever found a great smartphone photo taken with a flash ? Most of the time, they’re overexposed and make the colors in your photo go totally out of whack. Take advantage of whatever natural light you can find. Play with shadows, or create a silhouette.

12825831_1664286583838711_1754771794_n

Keep it candid.
Candid shots of people doing things, or people with people, are often far more interesting. Because they more effectively capture the emotion and essence of the moment. One of the best ways to capture an interesting candid shot is to take a lot of photos. Try Burst Mode. You’ll have more to choose from, and often the best photos happen when the everyone is just so. Or an expression has been caught.

Use the right photo editing apps.
Composing and taking your smartphone photo is just the first step to making it visually compelling. Editing your photos using mobile editing apps is the next step — and a very critical one, at that. Hunt around for the best apps for your device. Read reviews. Experiment till you find what works for you and create some awesome images right on your phone.

And make sure you try these tips and tricks when you’re with us at the Tree of Life. The cool climes of The Tree of Life Grand Oak Manor await to take you off the grid at Binsar. Or splash out at the Tree of Life Resort and Spa, Jaipur with personalised cuisine, award-winning service, curated experiences around quiet luxury.
