Why Mistakes Are Important For Success

“By seeking and blundering, we learn.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Our lives have always been largely defined by two characteristics – we learn to live and live to learn. This instinct of observing the world and the ways of men around us has been coded in our behaviour since antiquity. After all, our survival instinct depends on it – something which is much more easily recognizable in animals. At the crux of this all lies the habit of making mistakes. And it is these very trials and errors that allow us to become better versions of ourselves and achieve unprecedented successes in life.

As the great German philosopher and writer Goethe says, mistakes are a part and parcel of one’s life – something to be cherished and to learn from. Be it our personal or professional lives, we tend to slip up, fail, and take the wrong call more often than not. But this is not something that should discourage us.  Rather, it should be celebrated because making mistakes is critical for our growth, development, learning and success. Here are three reasons why:

1. Allow us the opportunity for introspection

Today, we live in a world full of distractions. Technology, work and ambition are gradually alienating us from our inner selves. This is where a mistake provides us with a chance for healthy self-reflection. In a way, once we realize that a mistake has been made, we reach out to our inner selves in order to understand what went wrong and how can it be avoided or made better next time. To do so, people often seek solitude, something that nature and the wilderness can provide during weekend getaways in Uttarakhand or Kerala. Here, in the tranquil surroundings, we get a chance to ponder over the mistake, learn lessons, strengthen our resolve, and work towards a better future!

2. Impart us critical lessons

Rather crucially, making mistakes educates us about the wrong way to do a certain thing or the incorrect solutions to challenges. Eventually, by committing enough mistakes, one tends to land on the answer that unlocks successes on both the professional and the personal front. We all learn from our past experiences – to an optimist, a mistake is but one big life lesson.

3. Enable us to push our limits

To achieve greatness, one must aim for the stars. But if there is a resident fear of making mistakes, then we remain inside our shell and rarely get outside our comfort zone. A mistake is just one of a series of trials and errors that gradually makes us comfortable with the idea of experimentation and trying until we succeed. If one views mistakes as learning opportunities, then taking risks becomes easier – something that is essential to achieve one’s desired goals.

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new,” quoted Albert Einstein once. Whether you slipped up in one of your treks in Uttarakhand or made an error that led to losses for your client, fret not. The key is to never give up, because a mistake is just another learning and a stepping stone to success.
